Analyzing a specimen with 44 eyes
Dr. Vincent Smit is one of the ten pathologists at the LUMC. Autopsy pathology, breast pathology, gastrointestinal and gynecological pathology, lung and liver disease research, pediatric pathology, neuropathology, otorhinolaryngology pathology and urology are among the focal points of his research. In addition to innovative research, the Department of Pathology is known for outstanding theoretical and practical training and education. Likewise, the LUMC as a whole enjoys an excellent reputation as both a research and an education center. The Leica MultiView discussion system provides Smit with the ideal conditions for training, particularly when he has little time available for practical training sessions. During a seminar, this special microscope accessory allows all participants to simultaneously view the same specimen placed under the microscope by the lecturer. The LUMC owns two four-user Leica MultiView systems and one giant 22-headed unit: a custom-built system from Leica for a small seminar room with a round design–the ideal configuration for identifying and analyzing pathological specimens and exchanging experiences with the entire group during workshops. These customized solutions–of which Leica is the sole provider in the market–allow Smit to hold practical seminars in an efficient manner without paying less attention to his research.
