First steps in pathological research
The course of study at the LUMC concludes with a research project: in the final term, the residents can do research in a field of their choice. If they are interested in pursuing a PhD, they have the opportunity to do that as well. The Leica DM2000 is also ideal for use in biomedical research projects. It offers a variety of contrast methods: Bright and dark field, phase contrast, polarization contrast and differential interference contrast are standard, and fluorescence methods are also possible. Once they have completed their five-year course of study, pathologists trained at the LUMC can choose to work in routine pathology in Dutch hospitals or in research institutes throughout the world.
Quick and efficient learning–with healthy working conditions
The Leica MultiView systems, particularly the 22-headed discussion system custom-built for the LUMC, allows Smit and his colleagues in the Department of Pathology to manage their time optimally: with this intelligent microscope accessory, they can hold resindents’ workshops more quickly and easily without having to shorten the syllabus or neglect their own research interests. In the DM2000, Smit has found the ideal instrument for the entire course of study– from routine training to the concluding research program: a microscope that unites ergonomic considerations with optics that are suited to research purposes.
